Changes in EU regulation of ICT research and innovation are opening new challenges to which stakeholders, policy makers, and end users must adapt as soon as possible. This, however, might be hard. PANELFIT, a EU research project, is firmly committed to facilitating the adaptation process by exploring the regulatory situation regarding data protection, data commercialisation and security/cybersecurity in the EU and its Member States. As a final result, PANELFIT will provide researchers and innovators with operational standards and practical guidelines. In doing so, PANELFIT aims to reduce ethical and legal issues posed by recent technology while still enabling innovative research.

The project’s objective is to (1) facilitate the implementation of European data protection new regulation by producing a set of outcomes that serve as operational standards and practical guidelines able to reduce the ethical and legal issues (ELI henceforth) posed by ICT technologies while promoting innovation and market growth, enabling high-quality job creation and ensuring a high level of privacy and security/cybersecurity, to (2) suggest possible concrete improvements to the current regulatory and governance framework for the same purpose, to (3) create mutual learning and support tools and to promote networking among stakeholders and policy makers, and to (4) increase the quantity and quality of the information available to policy makers, professionals, journalists and general public.
